Amanda in Alberta: The Writing on the Stone (An Amanda Travels Adventure) by Darlene Foster #Review

I gave Amanda in Alberta: The Writing on the Stone 5*

Book Description:

"Be prepared to learn a lot about the culture while you follow Amanda on her adventure.”—Laura Best, author of Bitter, Sweet.

“What a great way for a young person to learn about a culture and to be inspired to experience other countries themselves."—Irene Butler, author of Trekking the Globe with Mostly Gentle Footsteps.

Amanda is delighted to show Leah around Alberta during her visit from England. They take in the Calgary Stampede, go on a cattle drive, visit Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, spend time with the dinosaurs at the Royal Tyrrell Museum and explore the crazy Hoodoos.

When Amanda finds a stone with a unique mark on it, she doesn't think it's important until everyone seems to want it - including a very ornery cowboy. Is this stone worth ruining Leah’s holiday and placing them both in danger?

Spend time with Amanda as she explores her own country while attempting to decipher the mysterious writing on the stone and keep it from those determined to take it from her.

My Review:

I’ve loved being with Amanda on her adventure in Alberta. The Writing on the Stone engages all the senses and gives a great sense of place; it’s obvious Darlene Foster has researched extensively. I presume the author’s main readership is middle grade students, but for anyone this book is both informative and educational (Well I learned a lot about the area and culture anyway!).

Amanda is such a rounded, multi-layered character that, together with her dialogue, an image of her is instantly evoked. Her sense of adventure and courage shines throughout the story, even in the most dangerous of situations. It’s a brilliant plot with plenty of action and suspense.

I read the book in one session, not only because it’s exactly the right length for this genre, but because … well… because I enjoyed the story so much.

Highly recommended. Go on, give one of Amanda’s adventures a go. You won’t regret it!

 The Author:

Growing up on a ranch near Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, Darlene Foster dreamt of writing, traveling the world, and meeting interesting people. She also believed in making her dreams come true. It’s no surprise she’s now the award-winning author of Amanda Travels, a children's adventure series featuring a spunky twelve-year-old who loves to travel to unique places. Readers of all ages enjoy following Amanda as she unravels one mystery after another. When not traveling herself, Darlene divides her time between the west coast of Canada and the Costa Blanca, Spain with her husband and entertaining rescue dogs, Dot and Lia. www.darlenefoster.ca
